From Sep 14 to Oct 14 2017
LURIXS: Contemporary Art is pleased to present, from September 14 to October 14, the exhibition of unpublished works by José Bechara. The collection, under the title "Buzzing", brings together about 10 new paintings produced in 2016 and 2017, which present the artist's recent research in the field of color.
Seven years after his last solo in the gallery, "Buzzing" marks the return of the artist to the commercial circuit of arts in Rio. In this series, an enlarged palette is revealed with luminous colors and contrasts, as well as works structured from a more closed frame, a more dense constructive grid marked by the presence of small territories of high colors that mixed the vertical and horizontal lines constitute the recognized geometric grid of José Bechara's pictorial course.
In addition to the exhibition he presents at LURIXS, the artist holds the Fluxo Bruto exhibition at MAM Rio de Janeiro and participates in the 7th Beijing International Biennial and the 1st International Biennial of South America, Buenos Aires.
About the artist
José Bechara started his production in the late 1980s, working ever since with paintings. After his studies at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, he began his experimentation with various media and techniques, carrying out his first solo exhibition in 1992. Throughout time Bechara developed an unique manner through the use of different methods and materials, enabling new experiences in the pictorial field. Instead of the white canvas, the artist uses worn materials smirched by time, incidents, and practices of a universe far from that of the traditional craft of painting. Colour pigments and brushes are replaced by ferruginous matter eroded by time, creating distinct chromatic effects. This experimental nature – coupled with a great aesthetic precision and through the development of a poetic language – lead the artist to the creation of sculptures and installations, associating his work therefore more directly with architecture. Today, Bechara is considered one of the most respected artists of the 1990’s Generation.
