Paramarelos

José Bechara

From Nov 24 2004 to Jan 08 2005

After expanding his work's boundaries when creating the A Casa installation at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, José Bechara now returns to painting and presents new works in the exhibition Paramarelos. His new works ? most of them rust on canvas ? were created during the spring, resulting in a yellowish oueuvre. "The combination of the decrease in the oxidation time and the weather conditions during this time of the year produced these different colours," says Bechara.

The exhibition gathers 10 canvases in small, medium and large formats, repeating the mix of oxidations with the oil paintings, which the artists resumes after 15 years due to its unique properties: "compared to acrylic, oil paint offers more possibilities, as it requires a holdup, drying slowly and allowing me to change the course of the work."

The artist expands his colour palette, with the use of black, red and yellow. Geometry, built on unusual substrates such as truck tarps or cowhides, returns to the canvases in this new series in which the artist demonstrates his interest in continuing opposition between formal meticulousness and informality.
