General Archives promotes an essential cultural space to the city of Rio de Janeiro, through a parallel event to that of the most important contemporary art exhibitions in the world, the São Paulo International Art Biennial.

Organised by six of the major art galleries of Rio de Janeiro, General Archives gather works by their represented artists, thus presenting a group exhibition that reflects the diversity, richness, and significance of contemporary art.

The space chosen for the General Archives is a warehouse located close the Botanical Gardens, the Antonio Carlos Jobim Centre for Culture and Environment. The Botanical Gardens are one of the main sights of the city. Created by D. João VI in 1808 to acclimate the spices brought from the East Indies, the garden was opened to the public in 1822.
