LURIXS: Arte Contemporânea presents Afonso Tostes' third solo exhibition at the gallery: Ao Mesmo Tempo. The artist displays a new work called Descartes, composed by scraps of sculptures made in recent years, the series Árvores, and two models for future projects.
"The use of scrap materials that would be discarded is not totally new to my production", Tostes says, referring to the series Prédios, which led to the installation Cidade Pequena. Actually, this concept starts with the origin of the material. The wood used by the artist was found in demolition companies and wreckage in centennial houses all over the city. "In Descartes, the re-use is radicalised. The sculptural interference is the result. The clustering of these pieces is what shapes new images and spaces", he explains.
The pieces of the series Árvores arose from a comment of an art critic about some sculptures from the series Perna de Três that also has wood as a raw material: "he told me that these works seem to have returned to their original form, that is, trees", recalls Tostes. From there, the artist went back to the studio to reinforce this idea. "At first, I was trying all the options and how far I could go ahead with the work that gradually started to make sense. The interest that always permeated my production opens new horizons. It?s a work in flux and with each sculpture I discover new possibilities."
There will still be presented two models from works at open air. The works are anchors cast metal, using branches of the tree itself as a mould.
In this exhibition, Afonso Tostes resumes his work as a sculptor, after a long period devoting himself exclusively to painting, especially during his last exhibition at the gallery.
